Cyndi Lauper’s Spinach Saga: A Diet Disater and Health Struggles

Cyndi Lauper’s extreme spinach diet unfortunately led to kidney stones instead of health improvements, which she candidly discussed on a podcast. Additionally, she shared her fitness routine and dealt with chronic psoriasis, highlighting the challenges she faces regarding her health.
Cyndi Lauper, 71, decided to give her health a boost with an extreme diet, which turned out to be more of a health hazard than a health hero. The 80s pop icon went all out on spinach, thinking it would grant her the powers of a superhero, but instead, she ended up with kidney stones. Ouch! This painful condition came about when spinach decided it wanted to play hardball and not provide the expected health perks!
Speaking on the Table Manners podcast, Cyndi noted, “I tried to be vegan. Every day [I ate] spinach, every meal, spinach, and I wound up having kidney stones, and they killed me.” Lennie even asked her, “Do you get kidney stones from spinach?” and Cyndi confirmed, “Yes, it has a chemical in it. If you eat too much of this kind of thing, and you’re prone to that… You can develop kidney stones. So I stopped that.” Lesson learned: moderation is key, folks!
As for her fitness routine, don’t think it’s all spinach and no sweat! Cyndi’s morning agenda involves physical therapy to work those tiny muscles, then onto weights, followed by a sprinkle of yoga. And of course, she fits in voice exercises because one can’t just sing like a diva without proper conditioning, right?
Cyndi also threw in a cheeky comment about her desert island dreams, saying, “I’m allergic to the sun. I’m allergic to the cold. I’m not gonna sit in the sun. I get wrinkles.” Clearly, the desert is not her ideal getaway!
But health struggles haven’t kept Cyndi down for long. After years battling plaque psoriasis, she finally found a specialist in 2010. The symptoms of this pesky condition include dry skin lesions that are itchy or sore, which can show up anywhere. Cyndi recalled, “When psoriasis gets really bad, it’s really hard to get up again.” She even compared it to being the Elephant Man when it flared up badly. How dramatic!
Once left bedridden and covered in rash, Cyndi’s experience was no walk in the park: “My immune system got a little wacky, and it took my strength away.” Talk about a rough patch! The star’s resilience shines through, proving she’s a fighter.
Cyndi Lauper’s journey with her health showcases the unexpected pitfalls of extreme dieting and the struggles of living with chronic conditions like psoriasis. From kidney stones caused by an excess of spinach to overcoming debilitating skin issues, her story is a mix of cautionary tale and inspiration. So, remember folks: eat your greens, but not too much, or you might just turn into one!
