Maria Shriver opens up about her “brutal” divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger, crediting her kids for their support. As she launches her new poetry book, she reflects on her grief and personal growth after the split that changed her life. Shriver shares the lessons learned about self-worth and relationships.

Maria Shriver recently took a stroll down memory lane, reminiscing about the ‘brutal’ divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger that left her, well, a bit of a emotional wreck. As she gears up for her new poetry book, I Am Maria, the former journalist–who filed the divorce papers back in 2011 after a solid 25 years together–shared her experience navigating through this heartbreak. Spoiler alert: it was tough!

In a snippet shared by People on March 24, the now 69-year-old Shriver, recalled looking back at her life at 55. She candidly admitted, “I was in no emotional shape to write a book. I was barely able to get out of bed.” Yikes! That sounds like a pretty low point. But we all have our moments, I suppose.

For her brood, which includes the charming White Lotus actor Patrick Schwarzenegger, 31, alongside siblings Katherine, 35, Christina, 33, and Christopher, 27, things took an unexpected turn after Arnold’s affair came to light. Finding out about his hidden child was the cherry on an already explosive marriage breakdown. Shriver noted, “All hell seemed to break loose,” which is an understatement if I ever heard one! She lost her job as California’s First Lady, her father passed away, and oh, her marriage crumbled. Talk about a rough patch!

In her emotional reflections, she expressed, “It broke my heart, it broke my spirit, it broke what was left of me.” That’s quite possibly the most heartbreaking combination of phrases I’ve read in a while. And through all this chaos, she credited her kids for their strength, stating they exhibited “grace, valor, and courage” amidst the uproar.

She also laid bare the depths of her grief, confessing she was “consumed with grief and wracked with confusion, anger, fear, sadness, and anxiety.” Not exactly a fun combo pack of emotions, eh? Navigating her identity in a post-marriage world was no walk in the park either. “Honestly, it was brutal, and I was terrified,” she said, and I think we can all relate to feeling that way at some point.

Then, in a twist that would make a reality show proud, she mentioned a bit of a ‘self-pity party’ that involved therapists, shamans, and even spending time in a cloistered convent. Sounds like a recipe for an avant-garde film. Yet, amid all this crisis, Shriver slowly unearthed some truths about self-worth and personal happiness.

“I’ve made lots of mistakes,” she remarked. One of them being linking her self-worth to achievement, which is relatable to anyone who’s ever tried to impress their boss. Learning to embrace solitude without feeling unworthy has been her big breakthrough. She shared, “I used to believe that if you didn’t have a partner, you must be unworthy and unloveable.” If only every soul could learn that lesson sooner!

As for Schwarzenegger, their divorce was legally wrapped up in 2021, and he’s spoken fondly about co-parenting. He told People in a 2023 interview, “My chapter with Maria will continue on forever.” Clearly, there’s love still simmering beneath their past turmoil, even if it looks different now. Who says love can’t evolve?

Maria Shriver’s reflections on her tumultuous divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger paint a picture of emotional struggle, personal growth, and ultimately, resilience. As she prepares to launch her poetry book *I Am Maria*, she unveils how family support, self-discovery, and a little bit of soul-searching helped her navigate this ‘brutal’ chapter. In the end, her journey might just remind us all that even after heartbreak, there’s an opportunity for rebirth. And maybe some laughter along the way!
