Amy Duggar King Talks Family, Freedom and Kissing Before Marriage!

Amy (Duggar) King discusses her unconventional upbringing in the notorious Duggar family, her relationship with husband Dillon, and her journey of self-acceptance in a recent interview with PEOPLE. Despite family scandals, she shares a warm bond with her relatives while embracing her individuality.
Amy (Duggar) King is anything but ordinary, clearly marching to her own unique rhythm. In the latest issue of PEOPLE, she opens up about her adventurous life with husband Dillon King and her unconventional upbringing in the Duggar family. You know, the family famous for being ultra-conservative and… well, having an extraordinarily large number of kids.
From a young age, Amy felt like the black sheep of the Duggar clan. “I was born out of wedlock,” she reveals, referencing her mother Deanna (who just happens to be Jim Bob’s elder sister) and father Terry Jordan. They eventually tied the knot but, spoiler alert, separated last December. Amy feels their nontraditional start added a sprinkle of distance from the Duggar standards.
“I went to Christian school all my life but I never really felt up to the Duggar standard,” she muses, possibly suggesting that being a very, very pious cousin isn’t exactly her jam. For all the juicy tidbits about Amy’s famous family and her blissful newlywed life, folks should grab a copy of PEOPLE hitting shelves Friday.
Little-known fact: although Amy sported the Duggar surname, it’s her father she thanks for her fierce independence. “I just wanted to make sure she wasn’t stifled or held back in any way,” says Terry, who took Amy hiking and let her listen to the secular tunes. Talk about an epic dad move, right? “I made a concerted effort for her to be able to express and be herself,” he adds.
And express herself she does! Amy boldly states, “I don’t feel guilty for being me.” She spills all the beans about her steamy romance with Dillon, who she says shares her vision of living faith and love in their own idiosyncratic style. On the topic of kissing before marriage, she’s got some rather refreshing ideas. “I think kissing before marriage should happen,” she insists, although they did put the brakes on anything more intense until after their I do’s.
Despite the contrast between her lifestyle and that of her family, Amy insists that they’re surprisingly open-minded, calling them “very, very accepting” of Dillon. The Duggars’ infamous family scandals — hello cousin Josh’s misadventures — may have shaken things up a bit, but Amy’s optimistic. After all the turmoil, she says they’re all gradually stitching their family fabric back together. “I love them,” she sums it up, which is adorably sweet.
So, in true Amy Duggar fashion, she continues to forge her path in the family tree – and it’s one that’s definitely not a clone of the rest.
In a candid interview, Amy (Duggar) King shares her personal journey growing up amidst a famous ultra-conservative family. Embracing her individuality, she values her father’s influence while navigating her own beliefs and romantic relationships. Despite the recent family scandals, Amy maintains her love for her family and expresses an optimistic outlook on their bond. She’s unapologetically herself and plans to keep it that way!
