Wynne Evans Breaks Silence on Strictly Scandal: ‘Just an Experiment!’

Wynne Evans addresses his removal from Strictly Come Dancing’s live tour due to a sex scandal, claiming the hand incident with Katya was a ‘body language experiment’. He reflects on misguided comments and an inappropriate toy video, and admits to the need for adapting to workplace standards. Evans is open to necessary training and is currently on leave from his Radio Wales job while his travel show is paused.

Wynne Evans, the face (and voice) behind GoCompare, has finally piped up about the scandal that got him kicked off the Strictly Come Dancing live tour last year. He found himself tangled in a web of controversies, starting with a rather awkward hand placement incident involving his dance partner, Katya Jones, during the competition.

In a now-infamous video, Wynne was spotted attempting a swift hand slide around Katya’s waist – not his smoothest move, really. It went a bit south when she shoved his hand away like a dodgy dance partner, and Wynne even tried the classic high-five, only to be left hanging. He later branded it all as a “silly joke” – but wait, there’s more.

In a cheeky twist, Wynne claims the whole fumble was just a premeditated experiment in body language, a sort of TikTok-inspired challenge between him and Katya. As he recounted in an interview with The Sun, Katya sparked the idea: “Why don’t we create our own body-language experiment? Put your hand on my waist, I’ll move it back, and let’s see if people notice.” Sounds like a plan, right? Well, maybe not with millions watching.

As their “experiment” went awry, Wynne and Katya supposedly had a good laugh out of the cameras. Wynne excitedly stated that their ploy did catch people’s eye, but when they tried to explain it all to the BBC, officials thought their video was too long and insisted they stick to a quick apology. Not exactly the best PR strategy, huh? His apology video then racked up a jaw-dropping eight million views on top of the original two million – wrong kind of fame, I suppose.

Then there’s Wynne’s comments about his co-star Jamie Borthwick, which he dubbed as “spit-roast” because apparently Jamie can bend like a pretzel. Yup, not meant to be taken sexually, just a shoutout to his flexibility. Clearly, the message didn’t quite land during a public photo call with Janette Manrara.

Wynne’s luck took a turn for the worse with another incident involving a not-so-subtle video of sending an explicit toy to Jamie. Reflecting on it now, he admits it was “probably the most ridiculous thing to do,” calling it a stupid joke gone haywire. He’s definitely learning the hard way and acknowledges that workplace humour needs to be dialled back a notch.

In light of all this, Evans has finally accepted that joking around in the workplace might not be the best idea. He’s even open to taking whatever language and behaviour courses BBC might deem necessary because, well, adapting to the times seems to be key. Meanwhile, his BBC travel series with Joanna Page remains in limbo and, as if that wasn’t enough, he’s on leave from his Radio Wales gig. Tough times indeed!

Wynne Evans has taken to the airwaves to clear the air regarding his controversial exit from Strictly Come Dancing’s live tour. From a supposedly harmless body-language experiment with Katya to misjudged comments and a cheeky toy send-off that didn’t land well, he’s certainly made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Evans now expresses a willingness to learn and adapt as he navigates the evolving landscape of workplace humour. Who knows what’s next for the GoCompare star?
