Paul Rudd Reveals the Surprising Reason He Nearly Missed Out on ‘Clueless’

Paul Rudd nearly missed out on his role in Clueless due to a spontaneous buzz cut he got after auditioning. During a podcast, he recounted the surprise and dismay of director Amy Heckerling upon seeing his new look. Despite this, he was still brought back for a screen test, eventually landing the role that made him famous. Now, as a sequel series is in the works, it’s unclear if Rudd will return.
Paul Rudd recently dropped a bombshell – well, more like a buzz cut back in the ‘90s – about how close he came to missing out on his iconic role in Clueless. In a candid chat on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast, the star revealed that he made a major hair decision that could have derailed his career. Spoiler alert: It involves a lot of hair and a barber shop.
Rudd, now a charming 56-year-old, reminisced about how he auditioned for the film sporting flowing locks that cascaded well past his shoulders. But, in a moment of impulsive madness – which apparently is a Hollywood no-no – he decided to go for the buzz cut. “A couple of weeks later, I wasn’t even thinking about it… I just went in and said, ‘Just buzz my head,’” he shared. That’s what we call a drastic move, my friends.
Well, cut to a week later, he ran into Amy Heckerling, the film’s writer and director, at a restaurant. And let’s just say she was less than impressed. “She froze and said, ‘What did you do to your hair?’” Rudd recalled, clearly amused, but perhaps slightly horrified. He knew he had strayed into risky territory: “You auditioned for this part… you can’t cut your hair,’ she exclaimed.” It’s like saying, ‘Oh, you were going to be the captain but then decided to walk the plank!’
Despite the hair blunder, our resilient hero went on to a screen test, where he donned a wig for the session. But of course, wigs are notoriously uncooperative, and luck was on Rudd’s side as his real hair grew back just in time for filming. Thank goodness for hair growth, right? Clueless, which took some inspiration from Jane Austen’s Emma, went on to make Rudd a household name as Josh, the dreamy ex-stepbrother to Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz. Talk about a timeless romance!
In more news, a Clueless sequel series is apparently in the works over at Peacock, with Silverstone set to reprise her legendary role. Heckerling will also be involved in an executive producer capacity. Whether Rudd will return hasn’t been confirmed yet, so stay tuned – we need to know if Josh will make a comeback. Fingers crossed!
In a delightful twist of fate, Paul Rudd’s impulsive haircut nearly cost him a role that would define his early career. Despite the challenges, he weathered the storm and emerged as the charming Josh in Clueless. With a sequel series on the horizon, fans are left wondering if he’ll reprise his role. For now, let’s keep our eyes peeled – what’s life without a little hair drama, anyway?
